A Speciel Tribute to Colleen Gilbert better known as Hester to all of us Reenactors
We will
miss Colleen so much that mere words cannot express the depth of our feeling of
loss. One never knew what was going to happen when Colleen (Hester) would get
that ornery grin on her face. I'll never forget when I came home from
the Lore of the Laughery, still laughing over something Hester got me on. Me
& Hester were sitting under someone's tent fly when a group of school kids
came by with their young, pretty female teacher. I was Simon Kenton that
weekend, so I began talking to them as Kenton, when unknowingly, Hester had her
famous fart machine sitting under me, in a basket. As I spoke to the young
kids & the young teacher, Hester, with her new remote control, made it look
like I couldn't control my bodily gases. Hester actually had me
embarrased, so I looked at Hester & said, "Stop it woman!"
Hester looked at me & said "Kenton, I know not of what you
speak!" After several times (about 4), the teacher gathered up her kids
& made their exits as fast as possible, thinking the smell was about to set
in! Hester, was rolling on the ground, laughing hysterically. And I'll never
forget being best man at Hester & Silas' wedding at the Fair at New Boston.
It was the highlight of the Fair. However, there was a soft, gentle side to
Colleen that most didn't see. She was always worried about my health, as
well as other friends of hers. She was all heart, and yet could make anyone
laugh, even if they were down. The world is a little darker with her loss. We
miss you Colleen.
